1. Geometry. a straight line that intersects a curve at two or more points.
2. Trigonometry. a) the ratio of the length of a hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle to the length of the side adjacent to an acute angle. It is the reciprocal of the cosine. b) a straight line drawn from the center of a circle through one extremity of an arc to the tangent from the other extremity of the same arc. c) the ratio of the length of this line to the length of the radius of the circle. Abbr: sec (no period).
